Reviews

"359 and a Wake-Up is an unique novel that covers the lives of three young men who served together in an infantry company in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. The book is unique in the sense that it's purpose is not to give the reader a vivid description of battles and the numerous fire-fights that occurred in this un-popular war, but instead focus's on how the war affected the men who served."

"The author, who served in the 196th during his yearlong tour, capsulizes the typical soldier who found himself in Vietnam, often against his wishes. To fully understand what it was like, we had to have been of age during this turbulent time in American history. For those who were either too young or not born, this book bridges a historical step between the somewhat care free 1950's and the more tranquil period of the 1980's."

"Weaved together are the stories of three major characters, who come from completely different backgrounds, but are remarkably similar in so many ways. All have either lost love, have love, or have found it. The war was just as much about lost relationships, as it was about the actual combat. Those who served all returned to a confusing time where they felt neither accepted, or could take any satisfaction in knowing they had contributed to the overall good of the world."

"For the veteran of Vietnam, this book will certainly bring back some memories, and for those who did not serve, will help them understand what it was like. For many veterans, the war still rages within themselves. The demons still live in their hearts and minds, just as they did for one of the major characters, John Whalen as the powerful ending suggests."

Review by Bob Skiles, July 2007

"359 and a Wake-Up is a refreshing change from the typical war novels that seem to be popping up these days. The book starts out with the three major characters prior to their going to Vietnam. In the case of John Whalen, he had an active roll in protesting the war and had the difficult decision to make on evading the draft, or serving the time."

"The book is not so much about the combat, but about the lives of each of these three soldiers and the tribulations they faced in not only Vietnam, but how it affected them after their return. It's a good, quick read that entertains."

Review by Ken Haines, July 2007

"As a Vietnam vet, the book does give the reader a good idea of what it was like to serve. THe author does a good job, despite the 30 plus years since the war. The chapters on basic training, and the early days in Vietnam, before you became short, were especially memorable."

Review by John Gibbons, July 2007
